Polk a Dot Day
By: Cheyanne
On Thursday, September the 19th 2013 Riverside School had a Polk a Dot Day. On Polk a Dot Day the teachers created MI groups there were a few groups. In every group there were Grade 5/6, 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s. Every classroom read and watched “The Dot”. All the groups went to different classrooms; the teachers that were in the rooms were Mrs.Nicoll, Ms.Hall, Mrs.Boschee, Mrs.Prioror and Miss.Kowalchuck. The groups did a different art project in each classroom. Some activities that we did were that we made trees with paint then we designed a paper. Then we colored a paper then we took an I pad and made it move. Then we took a cup and dipped it in paint and put it on a piece of paper then we painted the dots. Then we made dots with pom poms. These are a couple of things we did on Polk a Dot day.

                                                             Outdoor Activities

Outdoor Activities can be fun and can keep you healthy. Most Outdoor Activities are sports a lot of kids join sports because the meet new people. It’s not always sports you can play tag, play on the playground, or hide and go seek and many more. Playing video games can rot your brain but having fun and being healthy is better for you. There are indoor activities to that are fun but there not video games they are athletic games like bascketball, dodgeball, indoor soccer, floor hockey and there all really fun. Go outside or go to the gym there are so many things you can do too keep healthy plus eating healthy helps to.  This was written to let you know that Outdoor Activities are fun and educational

On Thursday, September 19th, 2013 we had Dot Day. Dot Day is based on a book by Peter H. Reynolds called ‘The Dot’. Mrs. Nicoll, Ms. Hall, Mrs. Boschee, Mrs. Prior and Ms. Kowalchuck all had different, fun art activities all using dots. In Mrs. Nicoll’s class we traced our hands on black paper then used jars and bottle lids and paint to make Dots on our paper. The dots could be all different colors and the pictures turned out really nice. In Ms. Hall’s class we each got a piece of a circle and we could color it whatever color we wanted. We could choose from colors like green, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow and black. When we were in in Mrs. Boschee’s class we drew a picture then used the IPad’s to look at in in 3-D. we used a app on the IPad’s called colarmix. When we drew the picture we drew on a special piece of paper with a circle on it. Mrs. Prior let us make dots using pom-poms. We used paint colors like blue, yellow, green and red. She would roll 2 dice and depending on what she rolled would depend on what color we made dots with.  In Ms. Kowalchuck’s classroom we made black circles then we painted the inside of the circles using water color paints. It turned out nice but sometimes people painted other peoples circles.  My favorite activity was Ms. Hall’s class because we got to color and it will turn out really nice. These are a few reasons why Dot Day was so much fun.

On Thursday the Riverside School students had an MI day based on “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, an amazing author. The students got into colored groups from grade 1 to 6 and we did exciting activities based on “The Dot.” It was an exciting day. My favorite activity was Miss. Hall’s .You were given a piece of paper with a black line on it. Then you would color it with every color of the rainbow and more! It was very fun. Mrs. Boshee got the iPads and downloaded an app called colAR mix. Then you would to go color a picture and then you put and iPad over top of it and then it was 3-D. it was so cool and amazing. Mrs. Nicolls activity was very fun, you had a piece of black paper and lids and you would dip the lids in paint and it made a picture of a tree. It was really cool. These are few activities that Riverside School experienced.

On Thursday we got sorted into groups with people from 6-1 right after we wacked The Dot. Then Dot Day started, first we went to Miss. Nicoll’s class. We traced our hand and arm to make a tree, then we took lids and dipped them in paint and stuck it on a page. Next we went to Miss. K’s room. Our groups got sorted into more groups then we started. We took plastic cups and dipped it in paint and doted it on a large piece of paper. Then we used water color and panted in the circles. This is how Dot Day works.

International Dot Day

The Dot
This was our first MI afternoon and all activities revolved around the book The Dot. It was an afternoon of art. Some activities were individual, some we had to finish our part of the dot and we will make a mural of dots, some were using the idap, and some had paints. We made big dots, little dots, we filled in dots. Great fun.

What did we do the first week of school?

What we did the first week of school to be the best that we can be!
Jordyn in grade four said that this week we got to pretend we were back in K- we traced each other then we had to make our person show that it was listening attentively. We wrote on our person eye contact, nodding of the head, not speaking when someone is speaking and listening from the heart. After that we got to decorate our person. Funny people came out of that class - some have braided hair, some have their hands up in the air. We have a twitter feed board in our class this year. We post what we did, how we did it and if we had fun doing it.

In grade three Abigail says that this week we wrote strories. We did this with a partner. We had to agree on what the story was about then who the characters where and what they were doing. We had to work together so we needed to use the agreements that we worked on all day Tuesday. We have had two community circles, they were about how the day went and who we appreciated through the day.

In grade 4 Luka said that this week we learned more about our friends and our teacher. The first day we said our names and one thing we liked to do. We filled in a stuff about you sheet that was fun. We told about our families. This year we are doing morning journals and that will be fun.We came up with the rules of the class by saying what it is we need to do to have a fun and safe class. We have a TRIBES booklet that reminds us of our agreements and we write what we would do to solve the problem that is in the book.

In grade 5/6 Rayden says we figured out that we need to wake up in the morning so we now do a 3k run  so that we can go to Elm Street's run in October. I really like the thesis proof that we do every morning, I am not really a great writer so this helps me and now I can already see that I am getting better. I like how Ms. K has us paying for our desks and then things that we do we get paid, we have to apply for the jobs, like I want to be the police officer and I get to help her. At the end of the month we have to pay our fines or just colletct our money- right now we rent our desks but we can own them if we save $3000. We have a store too and she will auction them off. Our fines are for breaking the agreements (TRIBES). This is going to be sooo good.

In grade 2 Jada says that this week we have started our printing- we started with the letter C. In math we use our white boards to write down our days of the week and the months of the year. We are getting ready for our Elm Street School run as well but we also do the monkey bars and this is not even in gym. I really like the gym time.
